Gold Leaf Fabric

Project Overview

This fabric material project was a great opportunity to revisit Substance Designer and continue building my skills with the node-based workflow, which doesn't come as naturally to me. It pushed me to dig deeper and improve my understanding of procedural material creation. I also really enjoyed rendering the final results in Marmoset Toolbag—a tool I haven’t had many chances to use until now.

Breakdown

I began by designing the height map, starting with the base weave pattern. From there, I added secondary shapes—like circles—and created multiple leaf designs. I incorporated a raised lip for the ornamental elements and added subtle folds to enhance the fabric’s realism. Finally, I developed the color and roughness maps for both the base fabric and the decorative leaf details.
